He has English, Irish, Scottish, and German ancestry. Black was born in Santa Monica, California, the son of Judith Love (née Cohen), who worked on the Hubble Space Telescope, and Thomas William Black, satellite engineer. He is a member of the rock band Tenacious D, which he formed in 1994 with friend Kyle Gass.
